Even if you have never visited Cavendish in Suffolk’s picturesque Stour Valley, you will probably have seen pictures of it on calendars, jig-saw puzzles, or old chocolate boxes, or possibly you will recognise it from its use in films and TV programmes. There has been a village at this point since at least Saxon times, the name Cavendish being derived from “Cafa’s Edisc”, meaning Cafa’s pasture or perhaps Cafa’s people. In the Middle Ages Cavendish was not so genteel. Sir John Cavendish was hunted down by a peasant mob here in 1381 during Wat Tyler’s rebellion (his son had put Tyler to death). Sir John was dragged to his doom in Bury St Edmunds, in spite of him hanging on to the handle of St Mary’s church and pleading sanctuary. The handle is still to be seen on the church, St Mary’s, whose impressive medieval tower forms part of the most famous view of the village, taking in the large green, the pink-washed thatched cottages at Hyde Park Corner (honestly), and the 14th century tower in the background. Happily this is one village that has retained its pubs: the 600 year old George by the Green, the Bull on the High Street, and the Five Bells.
