Beyton is a small and characterful village of fewer than 600 inhabitants four miles to the east of Bury St Edmunds, these days bypassed by the A14 that used to go through it. There are no shops left in the village, but Beyton still has two pubs and a lovely village green and pond, this latter with a huge old oak and pretty meadow as background. As should be the case the village green, complete with its mature lime trees, stream and geese from central casting, is a focal point of the settlement. The White Horse inn overlooks the green, a smart white-washed pub serving the local Greene King brew. Another notable building adjacent to the green is the beamed 15th century Manorhouse, now a B&B. All Saints church in the village is worth a visit inside and out. The interior is largely 19th century, including some elegant bench ends. Outside the tower is Saxon, round although with the perspective altered by its buttresses it can look oval at first glance. Also worth taking in is the churchyard, now designated as a county wildlife site with more than 50 species of wild flowers and grasses to be seen there.
