Markinch is an ancient town in central Fife in Scotland situated 6 miles north of Kirkcaldy and 2 miles east of Glenrothes. There is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods with the Balbirnie Stone Circle and the Balfarg Henge. The small town is said to have been the capital of Fife during medieval times as the burgh of barony of Dalgynch one of the seven provinces of Pictland. During the 19th century the main industry was coal-mining, Markinch was also an important centre for linen manufacturing and paper-making using water from the nearby River Leven. Markinch is a popular tourist destination and an ideal location to visit the attractions of central Fife, the town has a selection of hotels and holiday accommodation, shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Historically interesting features include Markinch Church of 1786 with its12th century tower, the Tudor Italianate railway station dating from1847, the Session House built in 1875, and the Town house built in 1899 and on the south-east side stands the impressive15th century Balgonie Castle. Activities in the area include walking, cycling, bowling, tennis and curling, there are two parks, a selection of golf courses nearby and fishing offered on the river
