On the north side of the Firth of Forth is the resort village of Lower Largo or Seatoun of Largo. It is situated at the foot of a cliff on Largo Bay in the East Neuk of Fife. Originally a single street running from the harbour at the mouth of the Keil burn, Lower Largo was created as a village for fishermen, however, with its fine sandy beach it became popular for holidaymakers. Lower Largo is known as the birth place of Alexander Selkirk, born 1676. A mariner marooned by his captain after disagreement. He was alone on the island of Juan Fernandez, off the coast of Chile for four years, returning to tell his story to Daniel Defoe, who then wrote Robinson Crusoe. A bronze statue dedicated to Selkirk stands in Main Street on the site of his cottage. Temple Hill at the east end of the village is said to mark the site of land owned by the Knights Templar brought to Scotland during the 12th century. The antique square tower of Lundin Tower is a remnant of the castle of the Lundins demolished in1876. The disused railway viaduct, with its high arches is a listed structure. Lower Largo was designated a conservation area in 1978.
