Elie is situated on the southern side of the East Neuk, between Lower Largo and St. Monans. The former royal burgh comprises of Elie and its twin town Earlsferry, the two formerly merged in 1929. Originally a fishing village Elie is now a small holiday resort popular with golfers, sailors and surfers. The High Street contains various shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Ship Inn famous for playing cricket on the beach. The Parish Church on the High Street dates back to 1639, the clock tower only has three faces as there were no buildings to the rear at the time. Another building with finest traditional architecture is the 15th/16th century Castle in South Street. At low tide Elie has miles of golden sand; the beach has been accredited with a ‘Blue Flag Award.’ Along the coastal path stands the first but small Lighthouse in the East Neuk. Further on the partially restored Lady’s Tower built in Ruby Bay as a summerhouse for Lady Janet Anstruther in the mid 18th century. Dolphins and seals are seen close to shore. There is a Watersports Centre, hiring anything from mountain-bikes to sailing-boats. The sheltered harbour is ideal for sailing and windsurfing. Elie has an 18 hole golf course, sports club, tennis courts and driving range.
