Cowdenbeath is a town in west Fife in Scotland situated south-west of Lochgelly and a couple of miles east of Dunfermline. Originally an agricultural settlement Cowdenbeath has been in existence sitting on the main route to Perth with its coaching inn, now the Bruce Hotel, built c1820. With the discovery of iron and coal the town grew into a mining community from 1844 and was known as the colliery capital of the Fife coalfield. The railway arrived in 1849 enabling economical export of the iron and coal; this ensured a boom in the growth of mining earning the town the nick name ‘the Chicago of Fife’ until the pits went out of production closing down from the1930s to the1960’s. Cowdenbeath is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base to visit the attractions of Fife with holiday accommodation, a variety of supermarkets, shops and outdoor market each Thursday afternoon. There are cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs with lively night-life. The town has a bowling green, a Community Leisure Centre with swimming pool and fitness gyms, a stock-car racing circuit at the Cowdenbeath Racewall and its own local football team Cowdenbeath FC. Nearby the Lochore Meadows Country Park and Loch have walks, picnic areas and activities including canoeing, in the park lie the remains of the 14th century Lochore Castle.
