Charlestown is a tranquil village in west Fife in Scotland situated on the coast next to the village of Limekilns, two miles south-west of Dunfermline. The village was planned and laid out in the shape of an ‘E’ by Charles the 5th Earl of Elgin c1760 to accommodate the workers engaged in the local industries of limestone production and coal-mining. Charlestown quickly became an important industrial centre, producing over a third of the lime of Scotland at the time, finally closing down in 1956. Charlestown is surrounded by panoramic scenery with cliffs over-looking the sea and a picturesque harbour built in 1770, it is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for visiting the attractions of Fife, it has village shops, the baronial Queen’s Hall built in 1887 and the Elgin Hotel and Restaurant built in 1911. The Scottish Lime Centre was founded in Charlestown in 1994; the centre gives specialist advice on traditional lime-based materials for the conservation of historic buildings. Deep Sea World is a major attraction in neighbouring North Queensferry, the National Aquarium has an underground tunnel and many species of marine-life including sharks. Attractions in the historic town of Dunfermline include the remains of Dunfermline Abbey and Royal Palace, Abbot House Heritage Centre and Andrew Carnegies Birthplace Cottage Museum.
