The picturesque and historic village of Aberdour, known as the Jewel of Fife, is located on the south coast of Fife. Although Aberdour is a small village it has much to offer, the village has quaint narrow streets, historic buildings, hotels, b&b’s, restaurants, convenience stores, gift shops, a golf course a bowling green and two award winning beaches. The name Aberdour means ‘River Mouth of the Dour.’ The Dour Burn (river Dour) formed the scenic natural harbour. Looking south over the Firth of Forth you can see Island of Inchcolm, and Edinburgh. Aberdour Castle was built on a strong defensive position on the east bank of the Dour Burn during the 13th century. The Castle is open to the public and boasts a large beehive shaped doocot, one of only five left in Scotland. Next to the Castle is St. Fillans Church, a small rectangular medieval parish church whose Romanesque nave and chancel were built c.1140. It was restored and re-dedicated in 1926. Aberdour’s Silver Sands beach is to the East side of the village, and is a European Union ‘Blue Flag Award’ winner. The Black Sands beach has achieved ‘Seaside Award.’ status; it is rockier and popular with visitors exploring the rock caves. Close by is the Hawkcraig an area used for rock-climbing.
