Milngavie: The Gateway To The Highlands. That’s not strictly true; but it is for those hardy souls braving both midge and muscle ache while embarking on the West Highland Way, the arduous 95-mile hike from Milngavie’s town centre to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Most Milngavie residents content themselves with the modest seven-mile commuter trip to Glasgow’s city centre, for which, Milngavie is one of its most affluent suburbs, with generously proportioned villas, and horizons of bungalows housing a demographic most similar to neighbouring suburb Bearsden. In many respects, Milngavie (pronounced Mill-guy) is a close cousin to Bearsden, and it was a town that grew on the banks of the Allander River, making its living out from paper mill and bleach works. Milngavie never truly surrendered to the Industrial Revolution, and its quite charms are a testament to this. There is a sense of being on the cusp of the countryside – Fintry, Strathblane, and Drymen are a short drive away – and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park makes for a pleasant day trip from Milngavie. The town has plenty for the walker – yes, even for those not quite motivated for the West Highland Way; Milngavie Reservoir is a popular walking and jogging route, while the sprawl of Mugdock park is an eden for dog walkers, an unspoiled wilderness that is a great place to keep a watchful eye out for deer and bird life.
