With its plumb location on the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, Luss is most fitting of its status as a conservation area, and is a must visit for anyone intent on discovering the marvels of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Renamed Glendarroch and brought to homes throughout the country, Luss was the setting for the rather uninspiring Scottish soap, Take The High Road, but it is easy to see why the producers would choose it as an idyllic snapshot of Scottish life. Over 200 species of bird, and more than a quarter of Britain’s plant species can be found in the immediate vicinity of Loch Lomond; little wonder why it is so popular with holidaymakers. Looking out to the loch, Ben Lomond dominates the horizon, while the more diminutive Conic Hill marks the Highland Boundary Fault, where the grassy verdure of the Lowlands gives way to the craggy, wilds of the Scottish Highlands – it’s spectacular stuff. Luss is an ideal venue for those keen to get a bit of peace and quiet – especially on the off season; it’s pier has launched a number of loch cruises, and the water taxi that embarks from Luss will take visitors to Balmaha or Balloch. Luss is accessible and pristine; and it is in Luss that Loch Lomond Golf Club hosts the Barclay’s open each summer, bringing some of the world’s finest golfing talent to the lochside course. For those addicted to commerce, Loch Lomond Shores is a massive retail park on the banks of the loch, and a chance to exercise the plastic in its many brand name stores. For those impatient children (and dads), distressed and in the advanced throes of shopping fatigue, the Sealife Aquarium will soon restore equilibrium, a suitably relaxing attraction in the most relaxed of surroundings.
