Howwood is a small Renfrewshire town, sitting close to the border with Ayrshire, and has both Paisley and Johnstone close at hand. To the south-west of Glasgow, Howwood is just one of the many small towns which have grown as commuter towns of both Glasgow and Paisley. Howwood sits on the Ayshire Coast rail line; it was plugged into the arterial rail link in 1840, only to see it close after just two weeks of service, reflecting the problems in trying to finance a working and inclusive rail service in the 19th Century. It reopened in the win-ter of 1876, and managed to last until 1955, when it closed once again. It was time to relocate Howwood’s train station, and on 24th October 1988 its current station opened, a short distance from the original location. It may be a small town, but there is a firm sense of community within Howwood: The Howwood Inn has been refreshing travellers and Howwood residents since the 1700s, with a beer garden that’s perfect for long summer evenings; the Bowfield Hotel and Country Club offers saunas, squash, swimming and spas within its walls, and is smuggled amongst Renfrewshire’s Arcadian vistas. Howwood is not far from Glasgow Airport, and with the splendour of Renfrewshire on its doorstep – Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, Paisley Abbey and the Weaver’s Cottage at Kilbarchan to name a few – it is a most contented rural settlement.
