Sitting on the Tail of the Bank, 22 miles downstream of Glasgow where the River Clyde widens into the Firth of Clyde, Greenock could be considered the larger, brawnier industrial cousin of its western neighbour Gourock. Like many of the towns in the Inverclyde region, Greenock’s past was shaped by the Clyde; it brought the town wealth and industry. From humble origins as a 16th Century fishing port, Greenock was on the map soon after the 1707 Act of Union. With the Union of the Three Kingdom’s, Greenock’s importance was swollen by international trade from Britain’s colonies across the Atlantic. Imported from the Caribbean, sugar was the cash crop, and Greenock was now the United Kingdom’s most important port on the West Coast. Greenock’s maritime history, intertwined with that of the sugar trade and the herring fleet, is reflected in its coat of arms: emblazoned with the motto, ‘God Speed Gourock’, it depicts a sailing ship alongside barrels of sugar and herring. It wasn’t long before the River Clyde’s expanding shipbuilding empire would spill over from Glasgow, and Greenock’s post-war vistas became dominated by the shipyard’s cranes. Less than an hour from Glasgow, Greenock in many ways is culturally similar – it has had the same challenges, that of the decline in heavy industries, and a rise in the service sector. It’s port is still used; the Clydeport Container Terminal is regularly serviced by cruise ships heading to and from Britain’s ports, stopping off before heading across the cobalt expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Greenock’s maritime history is narrated at Greenock’s Custom House Quay, where Greenock Custom House building, designed by William Burn in 1818, is now home to a customs and excise museum. James Watt, one of the Industrial Revolution’s most pioneering engineers, is arguably Greenock’s most famous natives, and lends his name to the town’s college.
