Looking out to the Firth Of Clyde, Gourock is a Renfrewshire town with the salty dog atmosphere of a Herman Melville novel, and a quiet charm that’s refreshed, replenished and restored by the sea air. Gourock as we know it today made its name as a fishing village; the white fish and herring fleets would dock in the town, with their catch ready to be cured or taken to market. Quarrying, rope-making and chandlery fortified the town’s economy as it grew. Nowadays the pace of life in the town has ebbed to the pleasingly sedentary. The fishing boats are long gone; Gourock is now a residential area, with a quality of life buoyed by bowling clubs, ice cream, yachting, coastal walks, and for the brave, mad and foolish, outdoor swimming. Actually, that last bit is only half-true. Though Gourock has one of Scotland’s last surviving outdoor swimming pools, you needn’t be mad, foolish, or both to take a dip – it is now heated, and the gentle warmth of the sea water more convivial than bracing. For those with swimwear and a sense of adventure, the pool can be found by Kempton Point. Gourock is well served for transport, with excellent road and rail links to Glasgow. The town also makes a wonderful base from which to explore the surrounding sea lochs and the Firth Of Clyde, ferries to Kilcreggan, Helensburgh and Dunoon all depart from Gourock. At the height of summer, with the cawing of gulls ringing in the ears and a bag of chips in hand, a stroll down Ashton Front Promenade is a lyrical reminder of British seaside holidays of yore.
