Way back in 142 to 144AD, the Romans under Emperor Antoninus Pius were the first to inhabit Bearsden, constructing the Antonine Wall to assist in his subjugation of the Scots. The Romans failed, and now only wall and a bespoke Roman bath-house remain. But in the here and now, the residents of Bearsden are the ones prospering, in an affluent suburb boasting its fair share of millionaires who share Pius’ high opinion of the area. A six-mile commute to Glasgow’s city centre, Bearsden is an ideal place for the upwardly mobile, and is a popular place for Glasgow residents to bring up a family. Bearsden is one of five towns administered by East Dumbartonshire Council, and in 2005, its G61 postcode was voted the 7th richest in Britain. Some of Bears-den’s most opulent residences are among the most expensive in the West of Scotland – the town is one ex-tended sprawl of mansions, bungalows and villas, that orbit Bearsden Cross, where Roman Road and Dry-men Road meet. Bearsden was known as New Kilpatrick until the 19th Century when the town took its latter-day name from the new railway station. With the Allander Sports Centre, LA Fitness, and the Bearsden Ski Club, the town has plenty to keep its resi-dents in good shape – the Bearsden and Milngavie Herald keeps them abreast of local news. Among the town’s highlights is Hillfoot cafe, opposite Hillfoot train station. An absolute cornucopia of confectionary and ice cream, the cafe is loved by kids of all ages, and probably makes millionaires of the local dentists.
