Barrhead is a town in East Renfrewshire in Scotland situated 7 miles south-west of Glasgow on the Leven Water at the edge of the Gleniffer Braes. Famous people born in Barrhead include author Christopher Brookmyre and comedy actor Gregor Fisher who starred in the hit TV series ‘Rab C. Nesbit’. The name Barrhead comes from a farming term, with ‘Barr’ being the furrows ploughed into the field to prepare the soil for growing crops and the ’head’ would refer to the location of the homestead, at the ‘head of barrs’. Barrhead developed during the 18th century with several small surrounding villages growing together with their textile industries; these included bleaching, calico printing and cotton spinning. The town became an industrial centre and was created a burgh in 1884. By the 19th and 20th centuries industries included copper-mining from volcanic rocks at Boylestone Quarry the base for the well-known sanitary engineers, Armitage Shanks porcelainware. Below the Fereneze Hills, Barrhead is a popular tourist destination with hotels and holiday accommodation, a town centre with shops, cafes, restaurants and several pubs, a supermarket, churches, bowling clubs, golf club, tennis club and a boxing club. There are excellent road and rail links making Barhead an ideal base to tour the major attraction in the City of Glasgow and the surrounding area.
