Strathdon is a village situated in a fertile valley in the Cairngorms Mountains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and located 45 miles west of Aberdeen. Strathdon lies near the River Don as it winds through miles of farmland on route eventually flowing into the North Sea via Aberdeen. A famous resident of the village is the Scottish Comedian, Billy Connolly. The settlement here was once known as Invernochty, named after the original church, located where the River Don meets the Nochty waters. Strathdon is a beautiful area with wild dramatic scenery; it is very isolated with the barren moorland and mountain backdrop heading towards the Highlands. The village has a shop and amenities, a community hall and places to stay around the area. Historical buildings include Corgarff Castle, a rectangular 16th century, white-washed tower house built c1530, standing in a lonely area at the top of Strathdon, this unfortunate Castle has been burned down three times, used as barracks after the Jacobite Rising and as a base to stop illicit whiskey distilling, before being abandoned in 1831. Corgarff has been restored by Historic Scotland and is open to visitors from April to September. Traditional Highland Games, known as the Lonach Gathering
