Newburgh is a small sea-port town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated at the mouth of the Ythan estuary, on the Aberdeen coast. Newburgh is world famous for its Ythan Sea Trout; the river also is abundant with brown trout and salmon. Man-made tools made from flint, known as flint-knapping sites have been discovered around the raised beach areas in Newburgh giving evidence the town has been built over an ancient settlement dating back to prehistoric times. Newburgh its-self dates back to 1261 with a request from Lord Sinclair to build a chapel. Gallows Hill is the highest point in the town and was once used as an area set up to hang criminals. Nearby Knockhall castle is a 16th century L-plan with a projecting square tower. Newburgh is a traditional fishing town popular with visitors; there are shops, a hotel, a restaurant and an 18-hole golf course next to the beach. Sand dunes are found at the sands of Forvie. There are marshes and reeds full of wild life including, tern colonies. Aberdeen University has a field station on the estuary for student studying ornithology and botany to enhance their research. Forvie also has a Nature Reserve with a large eider duck colony.
