Keith is a town in Moray divided by the River Isla in Aberdeenshire, in the north-east of Scotland situated at the start of the ‘Malt Whiskey Trail’. Keith is well-known as the home of the Keith Kilt School, the only school in the world still teaching the art of kilt-making. ‘Old Keith’ lies on the west of the river and dates back to 1180 when it was used as a cattle-trade centre. ‘New Keith’ was planned and laid out in1755 and is the larger settlement. Historically interesting structures include, the ‘auld brig’ a humped backed single span bridge built over the River Isla in 1609, St Thomas Catholic Church built in 1831 with copper dome and St Ruffus Church built in 1816-19 with lofty clock tower, a fine example of perpendicular Gothic. Keith is a traditional town with large Main Square, a shopping street with a range of shops and amenities. There is a sports hall and an 18-hole golf course. Attractions include the Scottish Tartans Museum and the distilleries in and around Keith including; Glen Keith built in 1960 and Strathisla which has been operating since 1786, it is the oldest legally operating distillery in the Highlands and has a visitor centre and guided tours.
