Huntly is the principal town in the district of Strathbogie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, lying on the main road from Aberdeen to Inverness, where the River Bogie joins the Deveron. This area is abundant with castles and is included in the unique ‘Castle Trail’. There are two standing stones near the town, indicating the area has been an ancient settlement. Huntly was originally known as, Milton of Strathbogie, with the castle dating back to c.1180. The Earl of Huntly was granted a charter in 1506 and changed the name, planning for the new town came in 1769. Huntly is a grey-stone town centred on the main square with shops, restaurants and hotel, interesting historic buildings including the Victorian Town Hall, church, and the Clock Tower dating from1890. Huntly Castle and Caravan Park is set in picturesque parkland surrounded by hills. The rivers Deveron and Bogie are used for angling, nearby the River Spey is abundant with Salmon. The area is ideal for walking and mountain biking with various routes. Activities include pony trekking, swimming, golfing, and game shooting. Cooper Park has facilities including putting and trampolining. There is a Falconry Centre and the Nordic Ski and Outdoor Centre. Huntly is close to many distilleries on the ‘Malt Whisky Trail’.
