Fraserburgh is a town and fishing port on the north-east corner of the Buchan coast in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated 43 miles north of Aberdeen. Fraserburgh is known locally as the ‘Broch’ a Scots word for Burgh. The town is well-known for being the largest shellfish port in Europe. The town was founded in 1569 by Alexander Fraser, after being granted a charter in 1564, the first stone pier was built in1576 and the harbour was later developed and extended. The Fraser’s also built a Castle in 1547 on Kinnaird Head, a rocky promontory at the northern tip of town; in 1787 a lighthouse was built directly on top of the castle, and now forms part of the Scottish Lighthouse Museum. Fraserburgh has many historically interesting features including the Mercat Cross dating from1736 and the Wine Tower; the 16th century remains of a Watch Tower. Fraserburgh Heritage Centre displays interesting historical accounts of the town and people. Fraserburgh is a grey stone town with the look of a traditional sea-side resort complete with esplanade and beautiful sandy beaches. The town centre has a variety of shops; cafes and restaurants, there are both an open-air and indoor swimming pools. Other activities include golf, water-sports, cycling and walking.
