Fettercairn is a village close to the Grampian foothills in the edge of the Howe of Mearns, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Fettercairn is 4 miles west of Laurencekirk and the road to the north is the Cairn O’ Mount Road leading to Banchory and Royal Deeside. In 1861 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert spent a night in the Ramsay Arms. The stone, turreted Fettercairn Arch was erected in 1864 to commemorate the Royal visit. This can be driven through when entering the village from the south. The ancient village is built mainly from red-sandstone and focuses around the main square, in the heart of the village stands the Mercat Cross dating back to 1730, on the cross is an iron collar once used as the village stocks. The Church was built in 1803 dedicated to St. Martin. The village has a general store; tearoom and library, the area attracts tourists and has holiday accommodation. Fettercairn is surrounded by castles and historic buildings including Fettercairn House built c1660, Balbegno Castle a 16th century L-plan tower house, and the vitrified Fort of Green Cairn. To the north-west is the Fettercairn Malt Whiskey Distillery dating back to 1824, the distillery is open for visitor tours from May to September.
