Buckie is a fishing town within the district of Moray in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated 8 miles north-east of Fochabers, on the Moray Firth with the Burn of Buckie flowing through town dividing east and west. Buckie’s traditional fishing communities’ date back to the 17th century; Buckie has been described as ‘the largest purely fishing village in Scotland’. Buckie’s new town was laid out by the Gordon family of Cluny in the late 1700’s, with a central square and long main street, in linear style following the coastline. The harbour was constructed c1880 and was once a thriving fishing port catching herring and shellfish, Cluny Harbour is currently the home of an active shipyard. Buckie is a quaint town with attractively painted old fishermen’s houses; it is popular with tourists and has a hotel. Historical structures include, The North Parish Church dating from 1880, housing the town clock, overlooking Cluny square. Recreational facilities include two cliff-top golf courses, a swimming pool, two bowling greens, the Maritime Heritage Centre and a gallery. Buckie lies at the finishing point of the Speyside Way, a scenic long distance footpath along the coast. The distillery at Inchgower, sits a mile inland from town; best known for its Inchgower Single Malt.
