Ballater is a small ancient town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland situated in Royal Deeside, lying on the River Dee, 43 miles west of Aberdeen. Behind the town to the north, runs the Pass of Ballater, an ice-worn ravine; where there is evidence the area has been a prehistoric settlement with a large collection of Pictish symbol stones. The town dates back to c1300 and was built around the central church green, the buildings are made from red granite, there are shops and amenities, a museum, hotels and restaurants, the Town Hall was built as a memorial to Prince Albert and the Royal Bridge, spanning the River Dee, was opened in 1885 by Queen Victoria. Ballater is a popular area with tourists lying on the route to Balmoral Castle, purchased in 1852 by Queen Victoria, Balmoral Castle is still used as the holiday home for the current Royal Family. Ballater sits in a beautiful area surrounded by forest and the Cairngorm Mountain range. Ballater is a centre for orienteering and has many sporting facilities including an 18-hole golf course and bike hire shops. There are gentle walks at Craigendarroch and more advanced walks on Lochnagar Mountain. Ballater holds a walking week each May.
