Ullapool is a Fairtrade village on the shores of Loch Broom in the North-West Highlands of Scotland, situated 1 hours drive north of Loch Ness. Ullapool has had a settlement in the area dating back 4000years. An excavation on the west shore of the Dun of Lagaidh found a 1st millennium BC fort and a motte and bailey castle, the area is abundant with cairns, brochs and Pictish relics. Designed and built in 1788, Ullapool was once a fishing village with an important port, the harbour remains the central feature of the village and still used as a fishing port, however, it is also used as a yachting marina and a ferry-port for access to Stornaway and the Outer Hebrides. Harbour cruises operate across Loch Broom and the Summers Isles giving the opportunity to view the scenery and wildlife. Ullapool is a popular resort for tourists with a range of accommodation including; hotels, B&B’s, self-catering cottages, and caravan and camping. There are many shops, a supermarket, cafes, restaurants, bars and night-life. Ullapool has a Sports Centre with swimming pool, a Village Hall, and an award winning Museum and Visitor Centre. There is a beautiful beach, a coastal golf course, walking tours, kayaking, fishing and sea angling.
