Tongue is a historic village on the north coast of Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland situated 31 miles north of Lairg. There is evidence of ancient settlements in the area with various Bronze Age burial sites, Iron Age Brochs and early Christian stones, Tongue is thought to have been occupied by the Norse from the 900s-1200s with the name coming from 'tunga' describing the tongue-shaped land projecting into the water, the ruins of the tower Castle Varrich sitting one mile to the west of the village are also believed to date back to Norse rule. Tongue lies on the east shore of the Kyle of Tongue with Ben Loyal standing at 2506ft high overshadowing the village on the south side, it is a popular tourist destination particularly with walkers, climbers and nature enthusiasts, there are two hotels, a youth hostel, b&b's, guest-houses, self-catering accommodation a general store and a craft shop. Historically interesting buildings include House of Tongue built in 1678 by the Mackay's after they established their Clan Seat in Tongue in 1554 and the 18th century boathouse said to have housed Jacobite prisoners from the ship 'Hazard' in 1746 when they were captured as they tried to transport Bonny Prince Charlie's gold to fund his rebellion.
