Sutherland is a county which forms one of the eight districts of the Highlands of Scotland local government regions. The county town is Dornoch, other settlements include Brora, Durness, Embo, Golspie Helmsdale, Lairg, Lochinver and Kinlochbervie. The name Sutherland comes from when much of the Highlands and Islands came under Norse rule, from ‘Suorland’ meaning ‘land to the south’. Sutherland is well-known as the location of the Highland Clearances, where people were evicted from their homes to make room for sheep. Sutherland forms part of Scotland’s northern wilderness along with Caithness. The remote Cape Wrath is the most north-western point in Britain. The North Sea (Moray Firth) coastline is to the east and the Atlantic Coastline is to the west and north. The scenery varies from cliffs, islands, remote moor-land, beautiful sandy unspoilt beaches, ancient forests and spectacular mountain views. Sutherland is a popular tourist area with a vast amount of holiday accommodation ranging from hotels to bunk-houses. Attractions include ruins of Castles and ancient monuments some dating back 5-6000 years, Heritage Museums, Caves and waterfalls. Activities include an abundance of golf courses, rivers and lochs for salmon and trout fishing, a plethora of walks, climbs, forest trails and cycle-paths, many whiskey distilleries with visitor centres and guided tours, rare breed’s farms and boat tours for wildlife spotting.
