Skibo is an ancient village in Dornoch, east Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland. Skibo is situated near the coast of the Moray Firth, overlooking the Dornoch Firth, a designated a National Scenic Area. Skibo is famous for Skibo Castle, a Highland Castle and Estate dating back to 1186. In 1898 philanthropist Andrew Carnegie purchased the Castle, where he added Loch Ospisdale and the 18-hole golf course in a spectacular position overlooking the firth. The sporting estate is for members only with suites in the Castle and lodges in the grounds. There is a Spa and a variety of out-door pursuits. Many famous people have married here including Madonna, Ewan McGregor and golfer Sam Torence. There is a wide range of shops and hotels in the Skibo area, it is a popular resort for fishing, golfers, walkers and nature enthusiasts. Historical attractions nearby include Dornoch Cathedral built in 1224 by St. Gilbert, with the first service held in 1239; Madonna had her son Rocco christened here in 2000. The Bishops Palace is a16th century fortified tower, which is now a hotel, the Old Town Jail and the nearby Witches Stone dating from 1722. Dornoch has an award winning sandy beach, it is home to the famous Royal Dornoch Championship Golf course and there is a National Nature Reserve at neighbouring Loch Fleet.
