Poolewe is a village and port in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, situated 75 miles north-west of Inverness, close to the magnificent Torridon Mountains. Poolewe was once the most important port on the north-west coast of Scotland used by the cattle-drovers from Lewis and Harris taking their cattle to the markets. Poolewe is surrounded by spectacular scenery and is a popular resort for tourists. The village has a church, shops and amenities, a Riverside Park, hotels and campsite over-looking the shore of Loch Ewe. Loch Ewe served as an assembly point during WWII with a range of command posts and gun emplacements. On the west shore stands the War Memorial stone erected in 1999 to commemorate those who lost their lives. Attractions include Inverewe Gardens, which were developed by Botanist Osgood Mackenzie in 1862 with walled gardens and a collection of subtropical plants from all over the world, from eucalyptus trees to rhododendrons. The National Trust of Scotland has a visitor centre on site. There are beautiful sandy beaches at the neighbouring coastal villages, suitable for windsurfing. Gairloch has a Heritage Museum with information on the local archelolgy and geology of the area, there is a Nature Reserve and boat-trips to spot local wildlife including whales, dolphins and seals.
