Newtonmore is a traditional Scottish village in the Badenoch area at the south end of Strathspey in the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland, situated 46 miles from Fort William to the west and 46 miles from Inverness to the north. During the Highland Clearances c1800 families were evicted from their homes in the central Highlands to make room for sheep, the Spey Bridge had been built in 1756 nearby with a road network and by 1828 the new settlement of Newtonmore (new big town on the moor) was in existence. The village is a popular resort for tourists and an excellent base to explore the Scottish Highlands, Newtonmore is known as the ‘walking centre of Scotland’ and the village was used as location for filming ‘Monarch of the Glen’. The area is abundant with holiday-homes guest house and hotels; there are shops and amenities, restaurants and bars. Newtonmore is teeming with wildlife and a host of visitor attractions including; Cluny Castle, The Clan MacPherson Museum, Highland Folk Museum and the Waltzing Waters; a spectacular 45 minute water and light show. Activities include walking, mountain-biking, pony-trekking, and mountain sports, bowling, fishing, shooting and there is 18-hole golf course on the banks of the Spey.
