Morar is a small village on the west-coast in the Highlands of Scotland, situated on the ‘Road to the Isles’ between Fort William and Mallaig. Morar lies near the west-end of the famous Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater Loch in Europe, stretching 12 miles long, one mile wide and approximately 1000ft deep, it is said to be inhabited by ‘Morag’ a water-kelpie similar to the Loch Ness monster. Morar is well-known for its beautiful ‘Silver Sands’ beaches, used as a location for the film ‘Local Hero’. The village is set on a wooded hillside on the picturesque shore of the Atlantic Ocean with wild mountains and coastal scenery; it is a popular resort with a hotel, shops and amenities, Traigh Golf Course and places to stay around the area. Morar is served by the West Highland Railway with a station in the village, the Jacobean Steam train, featured in the Harry Potter films, runs round trips from Fort William to Mallaig. The ferry at Mallaig operates a service to the Isle of Skye, the Knoydart peninsula, and the Small Isles of Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna. There are boat-tours and driving-tours for wildlife-spotting, sightseeing and island hopping. The Mallaig and Morar Highland Games are held each August.
