Lybster is a scenic village in the Caithness County in the Highlands of Scotland situated on the north-east coast near Helmsdale, Wick and John O’Groats. Lybster is an ancient village with archaeological studies dating back to the Neolithic period. Prehistoric sites nearby include the bronze-age stones at the ‘Hill O’ Many Stanes’ and 5 miles north lie the 5000 year old Grey Cairns of Camster. Lybster’s main feature is its impressive stone harbour; the first pier was built in 1810 and replaced c1830 with the stone harbour still in use today. Lybster was an important fishing port during the 19th century and had the third largest fishing fleet in Scotland prospering from the Great Herring Boom. Lybster is a traditional fishing village with boats and lobster pots lining the pier. The village has a wide High Street, stone buildings, shops and amenities and places to eat. There are inns, restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation around the area. Attractions include the Waterlines Visitor Centre with exhibitions run by the Lybster Heritage Trust, focusing on Lybsters past as a herring port, local geology and wildlife. Further north is the Kyleburn Confectionery factory with visitor centre. Activities include walking, fishing, nature-watching and golfing. Highland games are held in neighbouring Helmsdale and Halkirk each summer.
