Gairloch is a settlement in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, situated 24 miles north-west of Achnasheen, lying on the north shore of Gair Loch at Glen Torridon in the Ben Eighe area. This historical area was once Mackenzie Clan territory from 1494 when it was secured from the Macleods. Gairloch lies in a scenic location with panaramic views out to sea, over to the Isle of Skye, Gairloch has beautiful sandy beaches and has been popular with tourists since Queen Victoria stayed at the Gairloch Hotel in 1878. Gairloch has shops and amenities, inns, restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation. Attractions include the Heritage Museum, with information on the archelology and geology of the area, a display of fishing boats and a recreation of a croft. The golf course was laid out in 1898; other activities include windsurfing, the Ben Eighe Nature Reserve and boat-trips out to sea to discover the local wildlife which includes whales, dolphins, seals and many more. On the shore of Loch Ewe nearby, is Inverewe Gardens with walled gardens and a collection of subtropical plants from all over the world. The National Trust of Scotland has a visitor centre on site. Gairloch hosts a Highland Gathering each June with traditional Highland Games
