Durness is a remote village in the Highlands of Scotland, the most north-westerly village on mainland Britain, situated on the Kyle of Durness with Thurso 72 miles east and Ullapool 68 miles south. The main industries in Durness are crofting and tourism. Durness village has a coffee shop and a licensed restaurant, shops and a petrol station. Accommodation in the area comprises of a hotel, a B&B, a hostel and a campsite situated on the cliff-top above Sango Bay with an access point down to the beautiful golden beach. Nearby Balnakeil Bay is another impressive unspoilt sandy bay leading to Faraid Head, with former military buildings now used as a craft centre. The main attraction to Durness is Smoo Cave, lying east of the village, the sea-cave has the largest entrance in the British Isles, it is easily accessible, floodlit and can be explored by boat. Archaeological studies discovered the cave was used 6000 years ago by the earliest inhabitants, the name ‘Smoo’ is norse for creek of cleft. The area is ideal for nature-watchers the isolated coastline is abundant with a variety of birds and wildlife including a colony of puffins, seals, dolphins, otters and whales. At nearby Bettyhill the Strathnaver Museum and Trail hold information on the history of life in the Highlands with emphasis to the Clearances.
