Dornie is a small historic village in Wester Ross in the Highland region of Scotland situated just off the Road to the Isles, 8 miles east of Kyle of Lochalsh on the east side of Loch Long. Surrounded by wild landscapes and the sheer mountain scenery of the West Highlands Dornie is a popular holiday destination and an ideal base for touring the region. The village has hotels, b&b's, guest houses, self-catering accommodation, shops and amenities and various places to eat out. Attractions include the Eilean Donan Castle established in 1230 by Alexander II to protect the mainland from Viking attacks, the stronghold has been restored and was used as a location for movies including Highlander and The World is Not Enough, it has a visitor centre, exhibitions, a gift shop and coffee shop. Nearby are the spectacular Falls of Glomach, the well-known mountain ridge the Five Sisters of Kintail, the South Glen Shiel and Sgurr nan Conbhairean mountains. There is fishing on the many Lochs, walking tours and trekking with Llamas at Lochend, driving tours to explore Fort William and the Isle of Skye, and underwater safaris to discover the marine life in the Kyle of Lochalsh on the Seaprobe Atlantis; a semi-submersible passenger vehicle.
