Beauly is a large village in the Highlands of Scotland situated at the mouth of the River Beauly, 12 miles west of Inverness. The village grew around Beauly Priory built in 1230 by Valliscaulian monks from Burgundy. The ruins of the priory stand at the eastern corner of the main square. It is though the French Monks may have made wine here and tradition continues 4 mile west at the Moniak Castle Winery. Beauly comes from the French for ‘beautiful place’ as the name suggests Beauly is set in beautiful surroundings with wooded hills and fertile farmland. Beauly’s most famous visitor was Mary Queen of Scots who stayed at the priory in 1564. The village was laid out by Baron Lovat in the 1840’s with mainly red-stone buildings. Beauly has good quality shopping with crafts, boutiques and antique shops, supermarkets, post office, restaurants and bars. Beauly is a popular tourist resort with hotels and a selection of holiday accommodation, regular ceilidhs, summer Highland Games, festivals, galas and shows. Nearby attraction include three of Scotlands finest Glens; Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Strathfarrer all have a variety of activities from nature-watching, walking, cycling, pony-trekking, canoeing, fishing and shooting. At Muir of Ord 3 mile south are an 18-hole golf course and the Glen Ord Distillery with visitor centre and guided tours.
