Bellshill is a suburb in North Lanarkshire in Scotland situated two miles north of Motherwell and nine miles south-east of Glasgow with the South Calder Water flowing to the south. Well-known people born in Bellshill include politician Robin Cook, singer Sheena Easton and footballer Ally McCoist. Originally the settlement was known as Bellmill and consisted of a row of quarry workers houses working in the local stone quarry c1654, the village disappeared after the quarry closed but re-emerged in 1810 as Bellshill, the railway arrived during the 19th century and the village developed as a mining centre. Bellshill is an attractive town with many of the buildings in town dating back to the late-Victorian era, it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and rolling hills and is a popular tourist destination and an ideal location for touring Lanarkshire and Glasgow; it has hotels and holiday accommodation, excellent shopping, restaurants, cafes and pubs. Attractions include the Motherwell Heritage Centre that tells the story of the history of North Lanarkshire, there are a number of parks in the area, the largest being the Strathclyde Country Park with water activities, scenic walks and M and D Scotland’s Theme Park a fairground with rollercoaster’s and rides for all the family. Nearby are the Dalzell Park, the Baron Haugh Nature Reserve and the North Calder Heritage Trail
