Airdrie is a historic town in North Lanarkshire in Scotland situated one mile to the east of Coatbridge, 11 miles east of Glasgow. Airdrie’s history dates back to the battle of Airdrie AD577, where the King of Strathclyde defeated the King of Kintyre for the land. The town developed in the 17th century from a farm steading, hand-loom weaving was the main industry in the 18th century and the town was granted burgh status in 1821 although this was lost it in 1975 when Airdrie became part of the Monklands district. The name Airdrie is Gaelic meaning ‘high hill pasture’ an accurate description of the pretty town that sits on a plateau approximately 400ft high, Airdrie is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for touring the numerous Glasgow attractions. The town has hotels and holiday accommodation, excellent shops, cafes, restaurants, a swimming pool, golf course and the 20th century Sir John Wilson Town Hall which hosts various activities including performing and visual arts events. Historically interesting features includes, The Wellwynd Church 1847, the Airdrie Town House 1826, Cairnhill House 1841 and the Weavers Cottage Museum consisting of two original weavers cottages renovated into a gallery and a ‘but ‘n ben’. The Airdrieonians Football Club was formed in 1878 and they currently play in the Scottish 1st division.
