Abington is an ancient village in South Lanarkshire in Scotland, situated 11 miles south-west of Biggar, lying on the south side of the Clyde Valley, with the River Clyde flowing through the village. Abington is known as a gateway to Scotland and historically would have been use heavily by the Romans as the village sits adjacent to the main road from Carlisle to Glasgow and on the road, originally built by the Romans, leading from the River Clyde to Musselburgh where the Romans had a large fort. There are many remains of Roman hill forts and settlements in the area including the foundations of a 12th century motte and bailey. The picturesque village is a popular tourist destination with a hotel and holiday accommodation, Glencaple Parish Church founded in 1898, a village shop, the Abington Visitor Centre, a golf course and the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve with gorge woodland, a mix of trees and an abundance of wildlife. The area is ideal for walkers, cyclists, anglers and nature-watchers, there are many attractions in the nearby Lanarkshire area including The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway built in 1900, at 1498 feet above sea level and is Britain’s highest railway, the station is open for exploring and there is a collection of preserved locomotives. The Lead Mining Museum is also worth a visit with the opportunity to visit a real lead mine.
