Prestonpans is a historic village in East Lothian in Scotland situated on the south-coast of the Firth of Forth, 2 miles east of Musselburgh, 8 miles east of Edinburgh. 12th century monks from Newbattle Abbey had the land and founded the salt-pans giving the village its name Preston (priest-town) (salt) pans. Prestonpans was created a burgh in 1552; the main industries were coal-mining and salt panning. Famous as the site of a major battle in Scottish History, the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745, when the Jacobites took control of most of Scotland by vanquishing the Hanoverian army (government troops); the battle-site is marked by a cairn. Historically interesting features include the 15th century Preston Tower and doocot, Prestongrange Parish Church (1596) and Hamilton House (1628). The yellow sandstone Preston Market Cross (1617) still standing in it original location and described as Scotland’s finest mercat cross. With panoramic views over the Forth Prestonpans is a popular tourist destination with a variety of shops and amenities. The Prestoungrange Gothenburg 1908 arts and crafts heritage building, offers fine dining and bistro services, bars and Fowlers’ Ales microbrewery which also offers tours. The open-air Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum features a brick kiln and a rare Cornish beam-engine (1874), there is a visitor-centre with free guided tours or self-guided audio tours. There is a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool and gym. The 18-hole golf course is at Preston Grange House.
