Musselburgh is a historic market and fishing town in east-Lothian in Scotland situated six miles east of Edinburgh on the River Esk near the sea. Originally the town was known as Eskmouth before it was renamed after a ‘mussel-bank’ near the mouth of the river c1200. Musselburgh received Royal Burgh status in 1632 and continued to be a busy port with ships trading to Holland and Norway until the early 19th century. Musselburgh is famous for its Racecourse built in 1817 and its ancient Golf Course said to have been played on by James IV in 1504. With its sea-side location and the beautiful Fisherrow beach, Musselburgh is a popular tourist destination with shops, restaurants, cafes and a selection of holiday accommodation including hotels, b&b’s, guest-houses and caravan park. Historically interesting features include the Old Bridge originally built by Roman settlers in AD80, the New Bridge built in 1806, the castle-shaped Tolbooth built in the High Street c1590 and the stately 17th century Newhailes Historic House built in 1686 with spectacular 18th century landscaped gardens. Fisherrow Harbour offers fishing and access for pleasure crafts and there are many walks around town including the John Muir Way a 70 km nature walk starting at the harbour finishing in the picturesque village of Gullane.
