Inverkeithing is an ancient Royal Burgh in West Fife in Scotland south-east of Dunfermline situated on a plateau on a hillside overlooking the Inner Bay of the Firth of Forth at the north end of the Forth Road Bridge. Awarded royal burgh status in 1165, Inverkeithing has many historically interesting features including the 5th century St Peter’s Kirk, The Friary which houses a local museum and the Friary Garden, the Town House dating from1770, the Mercat Cross dating from c1400 and Thomsoun’s House built in 1617. Inverkeithing is a popular visitor destination and an idea base for touring the attractions of Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothian’s. There is a hotel and b&b accommodation, pubs, shops and stores, fast food takeaways and cafes. The modern commuter railway station has excellent links over Scotland and regular service across the Forth Rail Bridge to Waverly Station in the centre of Edinburgh, there is also an excellent bus service and terminal with ‘park and ride’ facility which has a direct bus service to and from Edinburgh airport. The ancient Lammas Fair is held in the High Street each August and includes the traditional Hat and Ribbon race. Nearby attractions include Deep Sea World in North Queensferry, Andrew Carnegie’s Birthplace museum and the ancient Abbey and Palace in Dunfermline
