East Calder is a tranquil village and ancient parish in West Lothian in Scotland situated 12 miles from Edinburgh near the right bank of the River Almond 2 miles east of Livingston; the largest town in the Lothian’s. Surrounded by picturesque scenery East Calder is a popular tourist destination for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts and an ideal base for exploring Edinburgh and the Lothian’s, there is a hotel and bar, b&b’s, guest-houses and holiday accommodation to suit all, the village also has a variety of shops and stores, cafes and restaurants and a sports centre. Historically interesting features include the roofless 16th century St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, the Gothic style Parish Church dating from 1888 and Ormiston Hall built in 1851 on the site of the former Ormiston Hill House. Along the course of the River Almond former estates have been transformed into Country Parks including Almondell and Calderwood with woodland and riverside walks, an abundance of wildlife, play areas, BBQ sites, visitor centres and gift shops. A ranger service is available at Polkemmet Country Park. Nearby in Livingston there are three large retail parks and two major shopping centres; the Almondvale Shopping Centre and the Livingston Designer Outlet. The Deer Park Golf and Country Club has a swimming pool and 10-pin bowling.
