It has been sacked more times than the England manager but Dunbar is still standing, even if it’s present day importance is of less strategic significance now that age-old squabbles between the Scots and the English have subsided. As early as the Iron Age, Dunbar was an important fort; it’s location on the eastern flank of Scotland marked it as an important centre for trade, its port seeing much traffic. Significantly, it was vulnerable to attacks from Scotland’s Nordic neighbours. Back in the 5th and 6th Centuries, Dunbar was part of Anglian Northumbria – a portent of its later fate when Edward I warmed the English throne. The Norse onslaught loosened the English grip and eventually, the Scots would assume the town as their own in 1018 – after Malcolm II of Scotland saw victory at the Battle of Carham. Quarrelled over through the centuries, on the 27th April, 1296, John de Warenne, the 7th Earl of Surrey, led the English to victory during the First War of Scottish Independence. When the Earl of March’s castle fell at Dunbar it came hot on the heels of Edward I’s brutal sacking of Berwick; Scotland was there for the taking. Again in 1650, when the Wars of the Three Kingdoms raged through Britain, Dunbar saw some fierce conflict between the Scottish Covenanters and the Royalists. In contemporary Dunbar, the only struggle is on its golf course; the traditional links course offering the most resolute Pringle-wearing, golf shark the stiffest of challenge. Still, if the language on the fairway ever gets too colourful, it is sure to be drowned out by the brisk sea wind that rushes in from the North Sea. Now with a population of just over 6,000, Dunbar enjoys a tranquil and untroubled setting, and visitors to the area come for the views of Bass Rock, and the John Muir Country park. Dunbar's natives are more than content now that sacking and pillaging is so passé.
