Tyndrum is a small village in Strathfillan, at the edge of Rannoch Moor, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. The village is situated on the West Highland Way; a famous footpath stretching 92 miles along the Scottish Highlands, the village is overshadowed by the Munro, Ben Lui. The name Tyndrum translates from Gaelic meaning ‘house on the ridge.’ Tyndrum is a popular tourist resort, well-known as a crossroads for travellers, the A82 road linking Glasgow and Fort William passes through Tyndrum. The West Highland railway line also passes through the village, the station in Upper Tyndrum heads from Glasgow to Fort William and the Lower Tyndrum travels to Oban. Historically Tyndrum was built on the site of a battle in 1306 when the clan Macdougall acquired the Brooch of Lorne after defeating Robert the Bruce. There are surviving remnants of the Caledonian forest, looked after by the Forestry Commission. Tyndrum was also a gold mining centre; gold was extracted from the shale, the surrounding rivers are still popular with gold panners; the landowners tolerate this providing traditional methods are used. Tourists, particularly walkers and climbers frequent Tyndrum, there are cafes, hotel, b&b’s, backpackers hostel, camping, caravanning facilities and The Green Welly Shop.
