Crieff is the second largest town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. The scenic town is situated on the hillside of the Crieff Knock standing 911ft high with the River Earn flowing below. Translated from Gaelic, Crieff, means ‘Hill of Trees. The main industry here is tourism with the lure of The Crieff Hydro, a luxurious hotel complex with spa facilities, along with other holiday accommodation and a challenging golf course. Other industries include Whiskey, pottery and glassware. Historically the town was known as Drummond after the Drummond Earls of Perth, the local patrons. The town was destroyed in 1716 by retreating Jacobites in revenge. Crieff re-emerged and became a gathering point for cattle droving. Cattle sales were the largest in Scotland, there is a record of 30,000 cattle sold in 1722. Attracting so many unruly ‘Highlandmen’ resulted with Crieff having a bad reputation and keeping ‘the kind Gallows of Crieff’ busy. The remains of the gallows can be seen in Perth museum. The town square has an elegant fountain 1894 and the Town Hall 1842. Drummond Castle, 1491, lays 3 miles south on Muthill Road. The Sir George Murray mausoleum stands on the old site of the church of Monzievaird behind the Knock.
