Sitting plum in the middle of the verdant Trossachs, Callander is a small town whose population is multiplied during the summer months as tourists descend upon one of Scotland’s most unspoiled regions. Rob Roy country and the gateway to the Highlands, the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National park was the first of its kind in Scotland, and is home to a number of idyllic lochs and pristine forestry. The area’s popularity soared in the late 18th Century when Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Lady Of The Lake’ brought Lake Monteith to life in verse. It was an era that witnessed the growth of rural towns such as Aberfoyle, Drymen, and Callander. And prompted many a bank holiday exodus from Glasgow. So why do people come in such numbers? Well, Callander is less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow and makes an excellent summer day trip. There is an abundance of quality bed and breakfasts, and numerous holiday cottages available for rent throughout the year. Callander is situated on the A84, around 12 miles north of Stirling and is on the edge of the Highland Boundary Fault. The drive north leads to Fort William, Crainlarich, and ultimately the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. But perhaps, most of all, it is because the scenery on Callander’s doorstep is nothing short of breathtaking. Ben Ledi dominates the skyline. Rolling pastoral vistas surround the oft-winding roads that almost surrender to the roadside verges in the summer. Lochs that seem under a Tolkien spell reveal themselves in the short journey from town to town. Callander is a short, and more importantly pleasant, drive from Loch Venachar, Loch Katrine, Loch Chon, Loch Ard and more. All enjoy an excellent reputation for brown trout fishing, and in recent years the likes of Loch Venachar and Loch Ard have been a venue for northern pike angling. In total, there are 22 lochs located within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. All hold fish. And with The River Teith boasting a fine salmon fishery at Gart Farm just two miles from Callander, the Trossachs could be said to have a magnetic pull on anglers. It’s not just the fish. A bag of chips and a stroll down the banks of the Teith completes any summer visit to Callander. The midges may be at their worst but Callendar is at its best at the height of the Scottish summer. The Callander Highland Games are held in the town towards the end of July, and the town hosts the Trossachs Beer Festival in September, seeing October out with the Callander Jazz and Blues Festival. But Callander swings all year round. Its streets are lined with cafes and shops selling arts and crafts, outdoor gear, and knitwear. Visitor information can be found at the Rob Roy Centre and with midge repellant (Avon’s Skin So Soft is highly recommended) in hand, why not take advantages of Callendar’s blessed location and discover the area on foot through one of the many walking paths that knit their way across the immaculate terrain?
