| 10 Places to Stay

The former spa village of Lucan has grown into a large, residential suburb of Dublin, located roughly nine miles west of the city centre. In the 1750s, the small settlement burst into life with an influx of visitors flocking to spend a weekend and partake of the healing waters. But Lucan's history is traceable much further back, to the Viking invasion of the 10th Century. Many historic buildings remain in the Old Town quarter, including medieval ruins, and churches, cottages and houses from the 1700s. These include Lucan House, which is the Italian ambassador's official residence and stands on the site of a former castle. The old, picturesque part of Lucan, situated in the Liffey Valley, is counterbalanced by vast housing developments, many completed in the 1990s, stretching south and east of the main town to accommodate the "aspiring middle classes". As well as remaining close to the great shopping attractions of Dublin city, visitors to Lucan are within easy reach of big, colourful malls such as the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre and the Blanchardstown Centre. Golfers, meanwhile, don't have to go far to find the extremely scenic parklands of Hermitage Golf Club, a course that overlooks a lazily looping River Liffey.
