| 10 Places to Stay

The town of Killiney, with its spectacular coastal views, is probably Ireland's most exclusive neighbourhood. Situated eight miles south east of Dublin but seemingly a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is a place where bright, elegant villas and sumptuous mansions, surrounded by exquisite gardens, nestle in the hills overlooking the Irish Sea. Many of the properties are owned by superstars of sport and music: the huge gates guarding the home of U2 singer Bono have become a tourist attraction, and Enya, the multi- talented recording artist, lives in a Victorian castle above Killiney Bay (often compared to Italy's Bay of Naples). Happily, there's no need to be rich to visit Killiney, whose attractions include a beach, a Martello tower and a scenic nine-hole golf course. But the real appeal of the area lies in its tranquillity and superb setting, with the cliffs and hillsides offering panoramic views over open sea, peaceful bays, headlands and mountains. Anyone willing to climb Killiney Hill, crowned by an 18th Century obelisk, or its neighbour, Dalkey Hill - both included in the beautiful Killiney Hill Park - will be sensationally rewarded, and the cliff walk from Killiney to Dalkey is unforgettable.
