Coolock is a large suburb of Dublin, located in the city's Northside. Convenient to both the city centre and the airport, it's an ideal base for visitors wishing to explore the historic but exciting city of Dublin and its surroundings. Coolock was once a tiny village, which grew up around a small church with the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It only began expanding in the 1950s when industry, commercial businesses and suburban housing began to develop in the area. But the village's history goes back at least to the Bronze Age, with a burial mound dating back to 1500 BC still visible in the grounds of the Cadbury factory. Back in the present day, anyone hoping for a little retail therapy will enjoy browsing more than 70 shops - from high street names to local specialists - at the Northside Shopping Centre, the country's first covered mall. Another of Coolock's notable destinations is the Stardust Memorial Park. It commemorates the young people who died in a nightclub fire on St Valentine's Day, 1981 with a bronze sculpture of a couple dancing, surrounded by 48 fountain jets - one for each person. The Santry river passes the park as it flows through Coolock.
