Walshford in North Yorkshire is a small community that developed around a crossing by the Great North Road of the River Nidd – the local hostelry is called the Bridge Inn to this day. Everyone who has driven up or down the A1 will have seen signs to Walshford as they rush to their destinations, but it is worthwhile making a stop there. Situated just off the A1(M) Walshford is easy to get to, and it makes a great base for touring the area. Genteel Harrogate is only about seven miles to the west, and the wonderful city of York with its huge range of attractions is just a little further to the east. Racing enthusiasts can also make good use of the village as a base, with York races, Wetherby, and Ripon all within easy striking distance. This is an area of small villages, with some good pubs to find, and for those seeking something more cultural the site of the Battle of Marston Moor, fought on July 2nd 1644 is only a ten minute drive away along country lanes. One of the most decisive battles in English history, Marston was a victory for Cromwell over the Royalist army, with control of the North the prize.
